Jaguar

The Zapotec [and the Maya] believed Jaguar to be the most powerful guide and teacher. They also believed that after Father Sun completes his journey across the sky during day, he then slides beneath the horizon and at night transforms himself into Jaguar—the great cat who runs and swims through the nine underworlds before completing the cycle and turning back into Sun and rising again at dawn. Papá taught me that Jaguar has eyes that see in darkness and he fears nothing.
